Charters rules

1. General rules for employees

• training employees on the implementation of procedures for the protection of employees and guests and procedures in case of the infection of employees or guests
• maintaining the highest level of hygiene and physical distancing in interaction with guests
• wear protective masks during all interaction with guests, in both indoor settings and in open areas of the marina
• wear protective masks in closed areas of the vessel and maintain physical distancing when in contact with guests (skippers)
• body temperature check at the beginning of a work shift
• daily measurement of body temperature while on board (skippers)
• disinfect hands as often as possible when hands are not visibly dirty and wash and disinfect them when they are visibly dirty and disinfect work surfaces several times a day
• limit the number of people in indoor settings
• mandatory use of a protective mask by the crew when entering and leaving the vessel from the marina and refueling

2. General rules for visitors

• wearing protective masks in all common areas of the marina (reception, in catering facilities, at the table and, toilets) and in communication with employees of the port authority, the port captain and the maritime police and the skipper
• disinfect hand when disembarking and using the facilities in the marina (when entering the facilities in the marina, before consuming food and drinks, when entering common facilities and the toilet)
• limited number of tourists in the common areas of the marina (reception, shop, catering facilities, common facilities, and toilets)
• physical distance when moving through the marina
• unnecessary gatherings of people on the piers is not allowed
• in case of a suspected health problem, guests must inform the charter company

3. Cleaning the vessel

• before handing over the vessel, disinfect all areas of the vessel, especially equipment and places that are frequently touched
• installing disinfectant on the vessel
• regular cleaning and disinfection of air conditioning and ventilation filters

4. Reception

• inform guests before and upon arrival of the safety protocols used by the marina and charter companies and of the general rules for tourists to follow
• adhering to the scheduled check-in-time and maintaining physical distancing
• Internet or contactless payment

For your unforgettable vacation, you can choose one of our motor yacht, sailboat, or catamaran. It is essential to set the right expectations when you go sailing for the first time so that you will not be disappointed. If you have never experienced a boat vacation, it may not be very easy to understand the professional nautical terms. But don’t worry about it. We are happy to help you. What types of boats can you choose, and what are the differences between them? There are several different categories, according to the kind of propulsion, size, construction, sailing method, areas, and destinations as well. We will focus on marine cruises (seas and oceans) and the so-called recreational crafts. The following limits define them – length up to 24 meters, maximum of 12 people on board, and engine power higher than 4kW.

The most commonly used word in connection with sea cruise is a yacht. But what a yacht is, and what do you imagine by this term? The word ‚yacht‘ comes from Netherland and means ‚hunting.‘ Yachts are usually 6 meters high and can be up to 100 meters long. A yacht can be used for sports, but also for recreation, for discovery

but also for adventure For us is word Yacht connected with positive emotion, peace and family holiday on the sea in Croatia. And what do the lessons say to the word Yacht?

A yacht is the general term of a vessel. We recognize two basic types:

• Sailing yachts, also known as S/Y,
• Motor yachts, also known as M/Y.

With or without wind

The sailing yacht is powered primarily by wind and sails. In the port, you can maneuver the sailing yacht only by the engine with sails pulled down. If windy days occur, it can be powered on the sea by the engine. When using the sails, the sailing yacht can cruise safely around 9 knots. When using the engine, it cruises 12 knots. In the case of recreational sailing yachts, the length is 35 to 64 feet (10,5 to 19,5 meters). In general, sailing yachts are significantly more fuel-efficient than other types of boats, as they have one diesel engine. A sailing yacht is about emotions. The sun, water, and wind in the hair make sailing yacht cruise a different experience than a catamaran or motor yacht cruise. Also, they are ideal for romantic cruises. At the same time, sailing yachts are the safest types of vessels, as they have a deep lead pound (1,5 to 3 meters). In the case of a large tilt, it will help sailing yacht to return to a safe position. In terms of vessel construction, the sailing yacht belongs to the category of Monohull (so-called single-deck vessels).

A catamaran is a multihull vessel and is suitable for clients who have never been on a boat since it offers much higher comfort.

There are two basic categories of catamarans:

• Sailing catamaran, powered primarily by wind, with sails and two fuel-efficient engines for maneuvering (average speed of catamaran powered by sails is around 12 knots, by the engine up to 15 knots) or
• Power catamaran, which has no sail at all, but has two powerful engines that can sail at 30+ knots. It all depends on the power of the engine and the weight of the catamaran. However, this is at the expense of high fuel consumption. 

The advantage of a catamaran is its excellent maneuverability (it can turn in the place thanks to 2 engines) and has three times more space than a sailing yacht of the same length. It is ideal for families with children; it can anchor in the bay a few meters from the shore at a depth of only 2 meters. The basic recreational catamaran’s length ranges from 39 to 45 feet (11,9 to 13,7 meters). Luxury catamarans are long of 50 up to 80 feet (15 to 24 meters). In terms of vessel construction, a catamaran belongs to the category of multihull vessels, together with trimaran, which has three connected hulls.

Do you prefer more powerful engines?

In this section, we will introduce you to two categories: motor yacht and motorboat.

Motor yacht works with the help of powerful engines. It has no sail, and usually, there are more crew members (captain, hostess, cook) who take care of your comfort. At the same time, it has no ponds. More luxurious motor yachts use special stabilizers (gyroscopes) while sailing to ensure comfort on board. Motor yacht’s length starts from 10 to 24 meters. Super luxury motor yachts can have a length significantly exceeding 100 meters, including a heliport. However, now we no longer talk about the recreational craft, but we get to the category of a nautical yacht. Motor yachts can sail 25 or more knots without problems, which has a significant impact on their consumption. They have powerful diesel generators and can operate on the water as a small, fully independent house.

A motorboat (or speed boat) is a fast boat that mostly serves to move from a motor yacht, sailboat or catamaran to the shore. It has no cabin to stay overnight or any toilet space (in most cases). The size of the recreational motorboat ranges from 3 to 8 meters and has one or two fast motors from 50hp to 500hp. You can also use it for water sports (water skis, wakeboard or donat). There are of course special sport motorboats that have four or more motors with much higher power and provide much more experiences and fun of sailing on the sea.

Special category of vessels

A particular type of boats on the sea are gulets. It is a larger wooden sailboat with a length of 20 to 35 meters with sails and engines (that is, according to its length, either a recreational vessel or already a nautical yacht). The crew of three to four persons (captain, hostess, cook, lifeguard) is already on board. Boats originate in Turkey and are mostly over 20 years old. However, for reasons of commercial chartering, they had undergone a complete refurbishment a few years ago. It is a combination of a sailing yacht and a motor yacht with more space, where you can enjoy the atmosphere of pirate times. In the case of the gulet, you can rent the entire boat, or each guest can rent an individual cabin. In this case, it is called the Cabin charter. During the week you can meet tourists from all over the world, who have decided to enjoy a new phenomenon – A holiday on a boat.

Security deposit or insurance of security deposit?

One of the most important things to keep in mind when choosing a boat is that during the sailing, anything can happen at any time. In essence, from damaged hull to destroyed engine or propellers, burned battery, damaged furniture, broken glass, or lost water toys. When our professional captain is on the boat with you, 90% of those cases do not concern you, as the captain is responsible for any damage of the vessel. In case you are the captain, you don’t have to by worry. Even in such situations, there is a simple solution. The security deposit you pay when you rent the boat, is essentially a participation on the boat insurance. It is the maximal amount by which you are involved in the event of damage to the vessel (except in case of gross negligence – in this case, we recommend to take Yacht-Pool skipper liability insurance). However, in the case of a deposit, after returning the vessel, you may find that the boat is damaged, which may not have been caused directly by you, but you will still have to pay a charter company for the damage.

The second option for you is to pay insurance of security deposit at our partner company Yacht-Pool so that you don’t lose your money unnecessarily. In the case of damage to a chartered vessel, the boat owner shall be entitled to a security deposit for the remediation of the damage. This option is often preferred by captains, who are sure that they’ll damage something during the sailing week and don’t want to lose more money than necessary. The price of the insurance ranges from 220 EUR to 420 EUR, wherein the case of no insured event, the insurance company will refund you 100 EUR. It is an appealing solution and product for clients, but a disadvantageous solution for charter companies and boat owners, because it subsequently increases their boat insurance for the next year due to loss of insurance bonus.

Did you know that we provide regular services to our boats and most of them we offer with a professional captain? Therefore, it can’t happen that we give you a boat with a hidden or intentional defect. You would not believe it, but it is a ‚common practice‘ of some charter companies to pull money out of people for mistakes they didn’t cause. What is even sadder is that they don’t correct the defect. Then during all the 20 weeks long season, they charge the clients for the same mistake.

Boat insurance with Yacht-Pool International

We have been cooperating with Yacht-Pool International on boat insurance for a long time. This company provides a wide range of services, including: 

• Skipper liability insurance – Because in principle, you are personally liable with all your current and future assets for damages caused to others, including their property.
• Accident insurance – Accident insurance is provided if injury with permanent consequences or death of a crew member occurs during the operation of a vessel, irrespective of own or foreign fault. In case of a threat to a boat, you may use this insurance to cover the crew rescuing costs.
• Deposit insurance – Skippers, aware of their responsibility, demanded insurance against loss of deposit. Deposit insurance covers your participation in the insurance of the boat, and it is about 10% of the deposit. The insurance company will reimburse you for damage (after deducting the deduction of 5%) after returning from the cruise and submitting the necessary documents.
• Subsequent damage insurance – There is a risk that you will cause damage to the chartered boat, and that boat will not be operational by the next charter date. The charterer may require, on the bases of the lease, the obligation to pay losses resulting from the failure of the following rentals.
• Cancellation insurance – If a skipper or skipper’s family member becomes ill, he/she may not be able to embark on a cruise. If there is no possibility of ensuring adequate compensation and the sail is canceled, the cancellation insurance benefits can be claimed.

Yacht-Pool International also has the greatest experience in charter insurance. The significant advantage of this company is that the insurance is valid all year, and you can realize it online. All types of insurance (except cancelation insurance, which must be taken out together with the charter contract) you can take out at any time before the cruise, and the insurance is valid without territorial limitation. Except for the basic compulsory liability insurance, we also have extended accident insurance (in case of death, immobility, provision of a replacement vessel), and the possibility of sailing throughout all Mediterranean.

Reliable insurance without problems

This model is available to charter companies as well as clients themselves in eight different languages so that legal relations are clear to all parties. As a matter of principle, we do not recommend clients renting a vessel from a company that uses its unbalanced contracts, full of disadvantageous provisions against clients who cannot subsequently defend themselves.  However, in the charter business, the golden rule is that if the weather is beautiful and nothing happens to the ship, the client has nothing to worry about. At the moment when something happens, and the client signs a disadvantageous contract to the charter company or is not insured, it is unfortunately too late.

Questions and answers

Vladimír Oravec, the owner of Luxury Sailing, answered the questions about how this insurance cooperation works.

How does the cooperation between Luxury Sailing and Yacht-Pool International work?

‘Our task is to explain to clients the insurance possibilities (individual products), benefits if the client is insured, and the risks if not. If the client decides to take out the insurance, he will sign a contract directly with Yacht-Pool International with our help.’

What is needed from the client if he wants to take out the insurance?

‘Necessary information about the client, the product he/she wants to choose, signature, and payment. The insurance is valid for one year almost all over the world, depending on the selected product.’ 

What is the price of insurance, and what does it depend on?

‘It depends on the product itself. In the case of deposit insurance, it depends on the size and price of the yacht. Cancellation insurance is calculated individually by Yacht-Pool International for each client and may rise to higher amounts during the high season, which represents about 4.9% of the rental price. On the other hand, the client minimizes the financial loss if he can’t go on the cruise.’

If I was eligible for an insurance claim, how long does it take to get the money?

‘It depends on the type of insured event, the amount of the insured event, the kind of insurance you have taken out, and the type of policy you are claiming. According to our experience, it is usually from 14 days to 6 months. It also depends on what documents the insurance company will require and how quickly the charter company can provide you with them. Therefore, as mentioned before, it is very important to choose a serious charter company as well as a serious insurance company. We have the experience where the charter company refused to provide the client with documents for an insured event. After taking over the communication with the charter company by Zuzana Ballaschová, the director of Yacht-Pool s.r.o., offices for Slovakia and the Czech Republic, she managed to solve the payment of the insurance within two weeks.’

If we sail with your company, is it possible to take out the insurance by another company as Yacht Pool International?

‘The decision on which insurance company to choose and whether to insure is up to the client. As is mentioned before, if the weather is beautiful, and nothing happens to anyone, it doesn’t matter. But when something happens, it is necessary to bear in mind all possible consequences.’

If we’re a group that hasn’t cruised yet but has a captain, would you recommend us to take out the insurance?

‘In this case, based on my experience, standard travel insurance is enough for you. If you don’t have deposit insurance and damage the interior or lose some water toys, you only risk that the charter company will take some amount from your deposit. During the last five years, we have taken the money from the deposit only two times of 100 EUR and 700 EUR when the client drowned paddles and burned sitting cushions with cigarettes.’

What is the chance that your boats will experience a breakdown or damage that we did not directly cause?

‘In the case of a breakdown, damage, or loss that the client has not demonstrably caused, there is nothing to worry about. On the other hand, I have to say that we have had only decent and polite clients, unlike my friends in other charter companies, where for example, clients paid deposit insurance and burned teak deck with cigarettes, damaged interior, and exterior. In a week, they did damage of 20 000 EUR. In this case, it is already vandalism, and of course, no insurance will cover it.’

A boat vacation is a great way to take a rest and relax. It offers many unforgettable and original experiences. To enjoy your vacation fully and without any problems, it’s essential not to forget the vessel to insurance that can be taken out by you (the charter company should have its insurance by law) and also the choice of a charter company that provides FAIRCharter 19 Contract. Like this, you can avoid having to pay for damages that you didn’t cause. Sign an insurance contract before the holiday is a guarantee that you don’t have to worry about unpleasant surprises when you return the boat. Prepare insurance in advance and then enjoy your dream boat vacation.
